11 예수께서 총독 앞에 섰으매 총독이 물어 이르되 네가 유대인의 왕이냐 예수께서 대답하시되 네 말이 옳도다 하시고
Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied.

12 대제사장들과 장로들에게 고발을 당하되 아무 대답도 아니하시는지라
When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.

13 이에 빌라도가 이르되 그들이 너를 쳐서 얼마나 많은 것으로 증언하는지 듣지 못하느냐 하되
Then Pilate asked him, "Don"t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?"

14 한 마디도 대답하지 아니하시니 총독이 크게 놀라워하더라
But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge-to the great amazement of the governor.

15 명절이 되면 총독이 무리의 청원대로 죄수 한 사람을 놓아 주는 전례가 있더니
Now it was the governor"s custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd.

16 그 때에 바라바라 하는 유명한 죄수가 있는데
At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas.

17 그들이 모였을 때에 빌라도가 물어 이르되 너희는 내가 누구를 너희에게 놓아 주기를 원하느냐 바라바냐 그리스도라 하는 예수냐 하니
So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?"

18 이는 그가 그들의 시기로 예수를 넘겨 준 줄 앎이더라
For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.

19 총독이 재판석에 앉았을 때에 그의 아내가 사람을 보내어 이르되 저 옳은 사람에게 아무 상관도 하지 마옵소서 오늘 꿈에 내가 그 사람으로 인하여 애를 많이 태웠나이다 하더라
While Pilate was sitting on the judge"s seat, his wife sent him this message: "Don"t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him."

20 대제사장들과 장로들이 무리를 권하여 바라바를 달라 하게 하고 예수를 죽이자 하게 하였더니
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.

21 총독이 대답하여 이르되 둘 중의 누구를 너희에게 놓아 주기를 원하느냐 이르되 바라바로소이다
"Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" asked the governor. "Barabbas," they answered.

22 빌라도가 이르되 그러면 그리스도라 하는 예수를 내가 어떻게 하랴 그들이 다 이르되 십자가에 못 박혀야 하겠나이다
"What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?" Pilate asked. They all answered, "Crucify him!"

23 빌라도가 이르되 어찜이냐 무슨 악한 일을 하였느냐 그들이 더욱 소리 질러 이르되 십자가에 못 박혀야 하겠나이다 하는지라
"Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"

24 빌라도가 아무 성과도 없이 도리어 민란이 나려는 것을 보고 물을 가져다가 무리 앞에서 손을 씻으며 이르되 이 사람의 피에 대하여 나는 무죄하니 너희가 당하라
When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. "I am innocent of this man"s blood," he said. "It is your responsibility!"

25 백성이 다 대답하여 이르되 그 피를 우리와 우리 자손에게 돌릴지어다 하거늘
All the people answered, "Let his blood be on us and on our children!"

26 이에 바라바는 그들에게 놓아 주고 예수는 채찍질하고 십자가에 못 박히게 넘겨 주니라
Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

자신의 정치적 손익을 생각해 군중이 원하는 대로 판결을 내리면서 자신에게는 아무 책임이 없다고 손을 씻는 빌라도(24절)를 볼 때 어떤 생각이 듭니까?

내가 두려워하는 것은 사람입니까, 하나님입니까? 손해를 보거나 불이익을 당하더라도 하나님이 주신 양심에 따라 결단하고 행해야 할 일은 무엇입니까?
